Innovative Sports Science for Revitalizing Body and Mind

Based on an agreement which was made in 2009 between the University of Seoul, the Cajal Institute, and the University of Tsukuba, in this project we will jointly study effects of simple, mild exercise on neurocognitive function and ways in which such exercise enhances physical and mental vitality. Moreover, we will develop body and mind integrating exercise programs that are based on the essences of Budo and oriental body-work (SPARTS: the fusion of sports and arts), and apply and promote it in practical fields. We have established a new scientific field, namely Body And Mind Integrated Science, (BAMIS) and will conduct translational research from basic physical science to practical fields as well as promote collaborations between sports medicine and science, brain science, cognitive engineering, psychology, and physical culture. At the innovation centre in which some of the projects will be conducted, we will collect and analyze data through networks between the Physical Education Centre of the University of Tsukuba and affiliated schools, and will develop programs that will be available to practical fields.
