About the BAMIS (Body and Mind Integrated Science) project
The Body and Mind Integrated Science: BAMIS project, from 2010 to 2012. The research report and the interim report of our activities are showing here. Please see the photos for our activities and more introduction in detail. And, if you want the original copy of our interim report, please contact our BAMIS office for further information.

Decline in physical and mental vitality has been recognized in people, especially younger generations, in Japan. This is a major issue for Japanese, since such declines in physical and mental vitality will not only cause declines in mental and physical health, but also in national capacity.
The Body And Mind Integrated Science project (BAMIS) began in June 2010, when our research proposal, entitled “Sports Science Innovation for the Development of Tough Body and Mind: Introduction of Cognitive Neuroscience”, to The Ministry of Education Special Budget Request (reinforcement of multiple academic research systems by advantage of university) was accepted by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science, and Technology, Japan). The mission of the BAMIS project is supports and conducts scientific research integrating mind, body, and skills to help understand how physical movement develops the body and mind with vitality and pliancy. In particular, the purpose of the BAMIS project is to develop an innovative sports program aimed at developing a mind tough enough to overcome stress and to tackle obstacles. For this purpose, we will investigate the common essences of Budo(martial arts), such as Judo and Kendo, and of oriental body-work, such as Yoga and meditation, and we will study the effects of these common essences by using state-of-the-art techniques in cognitive neuroscience and by collaborating between independent research groups.
To enable us to accomplish our goal, we have created a new scientific field, namely Body And Mind Integrated Science, or BAMIS, in which translational research from basic physical science to practical fields and also collaborations between sports medicine and science, brain science, cognitive engineering, psychology, and physical culture can be established.
We will organize workshops, seminars and international forums. Furthermore, we will conduct basic, practical and translation research, and we will provide findings resulting from BAMIS projects to the public on our website.

Based on an agreement which was made in 2009 between the University of Seoul, the Cajal Institute, and the University of Tsukuba, in this project we will jointly study effects of simple, mild exercise on neurocognitive function and ways in which such exercise enhances physical and mental vitality. Moreover, we will develop body and mind integrating exercise programs that are based on the essences of Budo and oriental body-work (SPARTS: the fusion of sports and arts), and apply and promote it in practical fields. We have established a new scientific field, namely Body And Mind Integrated Science, (BAMIS) and will conduct translational research from basic physical science to practical fields as well as promote collaborations between sports medicine and science, brain science, cognitive engineering, psychology, and physical culture. At the innovation centre in which some of the projects will be conducted, we will collect and analyze data through networks between the Physical Education Centre of the University of Tsukuba and affiliated schools, and will develop programs that will be available to practical fields.

On the 1st and the 2nd of March, 2010, we held a part of the Tsukuba University pre-planning initiative research project: “The Innovative Sports Science Revitalizing Body and Mind Forum.” We had valuable discussions about Budo (martial arts), and other body-work techniques, and the integration of body and mind, about the significance of the body-mind relationship, and about how exercise programs can foster the effects that movement has on the integration of mind and body, and on the cultivation of a strong spirit.
